Gawar festival in Jodhpur

Jodhpur: Rajasthan's traditional 'Dheenga Gawar' festival in which men get beaten up by women concluded in Jodhpur recently. Mainly women take part in the 16-day festival in praise of Hindu diety Gawar, an incarnation of goddess Parvati. Women dressed up as policemen and even as Hindu monkey god Hanuman gave a traditional beating to the village youths, much to the amusement of the onlookers. Legend has it that any bachelor who bears the beating gets married by next year.

"We feel very good to celebrate this festival because this Gawar goddess blesses married women. That's why we pray. Beating of men is symbolic as the one who gets beaten gets married soon, said Sushila Sharma, a local resident. "I have seen many festivals but this is even more fun than Holi. This is wonderful," said Gracy, a foreign tourist. Cultural programmes were also held when women danced and sang throught the night.
