Ganga Mahotsav under way in Varanasi

Varanasi: A festival in praise of the Ganga has begun in Varanasi. A large number of foreign tourists and Hindu devotees are taking part in the annual four-day festival.

The Ganga Mahotsav presents a slice of Varanasi's art and culture, and attracts a number of foreign tourists. "I have interest in the programme. I follow it in France, in Paris or in India. I have postponed my departure for the Ganga festival. Now, I will leave tomorrow. It is always interesting, culture is always interesting, especially Indian culture," Catherine, a French tourist, said. Oraganisers said the festival highlighted the importance of Varanasi as the country's culture capital.

"Kashi (another name for Varanasi) is said to be the cultural capital of India. The Ganga festival is organised annually in Varanasi which is called the lifeline of India," Anoop Srivastav, the regional tourist officer of the Uttar Pradesh government, said. A number of cultural programmes have also been organised as part of the festival. The main attraction of the festival is at dusk when devotees float thousands of lamps placed on lotus leaves in the river.
