Chhat Festival Celebrated With Great Pomp in Bihar
(November 10, 2002)

PATNA (Bihar): The 'Chhat' festival was celebrated with great fervour in Bihar on Sunday, November 10. Thousands of devotees gathered on the banks of the Ganga in the State Capital Patna to pay respects to the Sun God. Special prayers were conducted for the welfare and prosperity of their families. Preferably, it is the bounty of fresh harvest, which is considered apt offering to the sun god.

The festival is celebrated six days after Diwali. It is especially significant for married women. They observe a two-day fast and offer prayers while keeping almost three-quarters of their body immersed in water for two hours. Traditional music is an integral part of this festival. Dancers and singers thronged the residence of Rashtriya Janata Dal president Laloo Prasad Yadav, who seemed to enjoy the 'Chhat' celebrations.
